This is technically still a WIP, but I am on the precipice of screwing it up royally, so this may yet be the last anyone sees of this attempt at a portrait of the talented madman Django Bates. At least, Django Bates in a silly hat.
Django is one of my favorite composers, as he has such an inherently studied yet totally absurd sense about him. An early player in Bill Bruford's Earthworks band, he is equally adept on keyboards/piano as he is on the saxhorn (aka the E-Flat saxhorn, the E-flat Peck Horn, aka a weird looking thing sort of like the bastard son of a fluegelhorn and a French Horn after a hot night behind the orchestra pit).
He can play very playful and accessible, or go totally off the avant rails. Small ensembles, noisy big bands, orchestral work...you name it. He's done some great collabs with everyone from Jaga Jazzist to Evelyn Glennie.
