Goes to Favs
Got to see Diz play a couple of times. Brilliant man, soft spoken and gentle (until the music started, then all bet's were off!). He is one of my heroes in life (B. Franklin, T. Jefferson, Duke Ellington, Diz, Buddy Rich)
Nice representation of his playing, man...
You are a far more fortunate man than I. I never got to see Diz, Miles, Tony Williams or Art Blakey before they passed. And I could have, which is the annoying thing.
I about crapped my pants when I figured out that I was playing drums on stage JUST before Art came on. Of course, it could have been MUCH MUCH WORSE if I'd had to play after, eh? He was a nice man, and treated me very well.
Blakey is like Roy Haynes (who I have managed to see live), simply timeless and classy under all occasions.
I am quite envious of your chance to not just see him, but to open is downright cruel to pikers like me.
