This is (finally) the follow up I mentioned to Dizzy One Bang. Simple and what seems to evoke the feeling I wanted of Dizzy Gillespie. This time I didn't even add gray tones. The sound bubble from his horn is the word "Tunis" is arabic, which is the name of Tunisia in said language.

For those totally at a loss as to why that is there, one of his most noted tunes is Night in Tunisia (supposedly composed on a trashcan lid late one evening), covered literally by hundreds of artists from Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald to Chaka Khan.

The version by him with Charlie Parker blisters paint it's so fast, complex and perfect.

So much expression with just his cheeks, and then you see the rest of his face. I like the quote from the trumpet--I love that song!

Like, wow, man...

Got to see Diz play a couple of times. Brilliant man, soft spoken and gentle (until the music started, then all bet's were off!). He is one of my heroes in life (B. Franklin, T. Jefferson, Duke Ellington, Diz, Buddy Rich)

Nice representation of his playing, man...

You are a far more fortunate man than I. I never got to see Diz, Miles, Tony Williams or Art Blakey before they passed. And I could have, which is the annoying thing.

Missed Miles, Bird & Tony Williams. Got to *open* for Art Blakey once... no pressure or anything...

I about crapped my pants when I figured out that I was playing drums on stage JUST before Art came on. Of course, it could have been MUCH MUCH WORSE if I'd had to play after, eh? He was a nice man, and treated me very well.

Cindy Blackman will be touring a new Lifetime/Williams tribute band soon (rumors are it includes Joe Lovano and Mike Stern) but her recent tour with Vernon Reid, Jack Bruce and John Medeski was amazing.

Blakey is like Roy Haynes (who I have managed to see live), simply timeless and classy under all occasions.

I am quite envious of your chance to not just see him, but to open is downright cruel to pikers like me.
