Repost: Economic Woes Hit Iraqi War Veteran and Ar

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 15, 2009, 1:26 AM

From zeruch.net.

Peter and Jennifer Damon established the Middleborough Art Gallery, but the economy has forced its imminent closure:

"When the Iraq War veteran returned to Massachusetts in 2003, he took up an old hobby, painting, to get the feel of his new prosthetic arms. But as he gained dexterity with his new limbs, Damon discovered that his artwork was more than just an exercise....In 2006, Damon and his wife, Jenn, fixed up an old building in downtown Middleborough, transforming it into exhibition space for work from Damon and other local artists....The couple will be forced to close the gallery this week...as the economy began to slump, so did sales at the gallery."

I wish I could do something for this guy right now, but ultimately all I can do is hope that his next venture (which he appears to already be planning for) is a roaring success.

"The couple will be forced to close the gallery this week, but for the former helicopter mechanic and his wife, the venture is a launching pad rather than a failure. Peter Damon said his new role as a painter has given him a platform to raise awareness about veterans' issues."

Art is often, in and of itself, a catharsis. A compulsion. It often offers more than the deceptively simple act of making "pretty pictures" and reading about someone like Peter Damon reaffirms that for some of us.

I do recommend that everyone get
familiar with the FAQ/Helpdesk

There is also the DA Status Forum (always informative), and the Etiquette Policy is something you should all refer to, because I do tend to lurk about in several of the public forums.

================================================================================

I have been described as an open source geek, a policy wonk, and even a bit of a creative illustrator (the latter being what folks here are most likely familiar with). All are at least partially true I suppose. I've been called all manner of adjectives, most of them contrarian. I was described once as a cross between Tucker Carlson and Lenny Kravitz. I have neither bow ties nor dreadlocks, but the description sounded incredibly cool, so I figured it was worth mentioning here.

I initially studied an individual major in Foreign Affairs and Technology Policy at UC Davis (with a language component at UC Berkeley), and am now starting to take coursework in Civil Litigation. I currently work in a few venues: a networking startup in Silicon Valley and do consulting to a corporate attorney in private practice, as well as occasional projects that meet my requirements for being interesting (which is a pretty broad category of potential). As one can derive from all of this, I do not do idle well, and I am not prone to boredom.

Here at DA I worked the HD for a year before moving to one of the Gallery Director slots for Traditional, until I sent myself out into the sunset in May of 2008. My own focus is on mixed media and looking for people who have yet to establish themselves. I periodically write content features, and regularly contribute to several of the forums.
